Responsibilities of a Funeral Director

A funeral director is a person who resides in funeral home and takes care of the body until cremation or burial. The job of a funeral director begins with collecting the body at the mortuary and ends with the cremation of the body at the burial ground. The responsibilities of a funeral director vary greatly from one region to another region.

What does a funeral director do?

1. The funeral director arranges for the transportation of the body from the mortuary to the burial ground. They even arrange for preparing the body for cremation.

2. Gather's information about the deceased person for processing of death certificate and informs the same to the social security administration.

3. Takes care of the floral arrangements for the casket.

4. Helps in preparing and publishing of obituary notices in newspapers.

5. Arranges a clergy to carryout religious services.

6. Responsible for collecting the remains after the cremation.

7. Talks with the cemetery officials and plans for the opening and closing of the grave.

8. Arranges transportation facilities to and from the cemetery for all the mourners. 

9. Takes care of the refrigeration or embalming process for bodies that are to be retained for more than 24 hours after death. They also maintain records of the clothes and valuables associated with the body.

10. Makes all needed arrangements for prearranged funerals. This gives peace of mind to people who wish to carryout funeral proceeding as per their desire.

Lastly, a funeral director plays a role in consoling the grieving family and friends of the person who passed away.
