Qualifications for becoming a funeral director: 1. Any student planning to take up the job of a funeral director should take up biology classes in high school and learn good communication skills. 2. Have to pursue a four year degree in mortuary science. In some places this is optional but a requisite at certain other places. Psychology majors will be in a better position to console the mourning family members and friends. 3. Should learn about the funeral and burial customs of various religions. 4. Should undertake a one to three year apprenticeship program. This can be done either at the time of pursuing the degree or before entering the degree program. 5. Must obtain a formal license to undertake the responsibilities at funeral home. The license can be obtained by clearing an examination that tests your knowledge about functioning of funeral home. 6. Mastering the embalming process eases the process of becoming a funeral director. 7. A dressing style that shows respect towards the families and the dead has to be followed. Men should wear suits and ties. Women should also follow an executive style of dressing. Lastly, as the job deals with people who are in deep sorrow, the ability to communicate gently is the major requisite for every funeral director.
